Solemnisation in Singapore — What to Expect
Solemnisation is the legal moment two people become married in Singapore. The Registry of Marriages (ROM) at Fort Canning Park is where most couples begin, but a Licensed Solemniser can also conduct the ceremony at almost any venue you choose — your living room in Tampines, a chapel in CHIJMES, a poolside cabana at Capella Sentosa, or under the heritage trees at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
The Ceremony Itself
A typical Singapore solemnisation runs 30 to 60 minutes. The Solemniser arrives, verifies identification, and walks the couple through the declaratory and contracting words required under the Women’s Charter. Two witnesses — usually your closest family or friends — sign the marriage certificate alongside you. Many couples then share a first kiss, exchange rings, and toast with champagne or a glass of teh tarik depending on the mood.
Where Couples Hold Their ROM
- Fort Canning ROM Building — the classic, government-issued ceremony with the iconic staircase backdrop.
- Home solemnisation — a popular choice for HDB and condo couples who want parents and grandparents present without the logistics of a venue.
- Hotel ballrooms & restaurants — Marina Bay Sands, Capella, Raffles, Lewin Terrace, Burnt Ends, where the ROM flows directly into a luncheon.
- Outdoor venues — Botanic Gardens (Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage), Gardens by the Bay (Floral Fantasy), Sentosa beach pavilions.
- Places of faith — CHIJMES, Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, often paired with traditional rites.
Cultural Touches Worth Capturing
Many Singaporean ROMs blend the legal ceremony with cultural elements — a Chinese tea ceremony for parents and elders, a Peranakan dressing tradition, or a Western-style ring exchange and toast. These are usually the most emotional moments of the day, and the ones grandparents will look at again and again. Our coverage is built around them.
Why Two Hours Is Enough
Most ROMs last about an hour, but the meaningful moments — parents adjusting your dress, the witnesses signing, the first hug afterward, the group photo with grandparents — happen in the 30 minutes before and after. The 2-hour window is designed to capture all of it without rushing or padding.
Singapore-Specific Notes
- ROM dates in Singapore must be booked at least 21 days and not more than 3 months in advance via ROM’s online portal.
- Outdoor ceremonies should plan for the monsoon seasons (Nov–Jan and Jun–Aug) — we always have an indoor backup plan.
- If you’re using a non-English Solemniser, let us know early so we can coordinate language flow with the videographer.
- Free parking near Fort Canning is limited — most couples Grab in for the ceremony.
